Professional Wearer of Period Costumes Keira Knightley is at it again. The actress
stars as Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in the fashion house's latest short
film, which is set to debut on May 8th at Chanel’s Cruise collection event in
Singapore. And, while many actresses have played the iconic designer —
like Audrey Tautou and Shirley MacLaine, to name a few — Knightley
is the first one to be directed by Karl Lagerfeld.
The film takes place in 1913 Deauville at the first Chanel boutique — which was recreated at Lagerfeld's request — but it sounds like the historical accuracy ends there. As WWD reports, Knightley, along with the film's other stars — models Stella Tennant, Saskia De Brauw, and Lindsey Wixson — were told to improvise their lines.
The designer calls it "invented reality," which means, like most fashion films, the plot probably won't make a lot of sense.
