FIFTY of fashion's most
beautiful dresses will go on show at Bath's Fashion Museum on February 2, as
the museum celebrates its 50th birthday. The 50 Fabulous
Frocks exhibition - which took two years to create - will include iconic
names such as Schiaparelli, Christian
Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, in addition to
contemporary labels, including Erdem and John
Rocha.
"The selection of
the 50 pieces has been a careful editorial process," said Fashion Museum
principal curator Rosemary Harden, who compiled the showcase with fashion
writer Iain R Webb. "There were some show-stoppers to be included right
from the start, but other pieces came and went - and then came back again into
the final exhibition object list. Some of the pieces in the show illustrate a
personal wardrobe moment, while others mark an iconic moment in fashion
history."
Highlights include an
Yves Saint Laurent black and white ostrich feather and rhinestone ensemble,
which originally belonged to legendary ballerina Margot Fonteyn; a delicate
cream silk evening dress from the 1820s, which is embroidered with gold
metallic ribbon; and a floor-length style, inspired by a Champagne bottle, worn
at a fancy dress party during the Edwardian era. The earliest piece on show
dates back to the 1660, while the most recent is taken from Burberry's autumn/winter 2012-13 collection.
"We hope that 50
Frocks illustrates a slice of the Fashion Museum collection, which numbers
between 80 and 1, 000,00 objects," Harden told us. "All 50 are
fabulous in their own way. If you love fashion, you'll love 50 Fabulous
Frocks."
