Christian Wijnants has been named the winner of the International
Woolmark Prize. He takes home $105,000 in prize money and his winning
collection will be sold at Bergdorf Goodman, 10 Corso Como, and other top
retailers the world over.
The International Woolmark Award, sponsored by Australia’s Woolmark
Company, is an international fashion design competition (designers must create
designs using Australia’s Merino wool) which was won by both Yves Saint Laurent
and Karl Lagerfeld in the 1905s. The award was revived this year, and Sophie
Theallet was named as a finalist from the U.S. Other finalists included Dion Lee from Australia, Ban Xiao Xiu from China, DressedUndressed from Japan,
and Pankaj and Nidhi from India.
WWD is reporting that the design
competition–which has support from the Council of Fashion Designers of America,
the British Fashion Council, and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture–will run
for at least another two years. Next year’s prize will be announced in Milan,
and the year after that,
